Understanding the System: How 4MOTION Works
At its core, 4MOTION is Volkswagen’s name for its all-wheel drive system. In gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles, it typically uses an electro-hydraulic centre differential known as a Haldex coupling. Under normal driving conditions, most of the power is sent to the front wheels for efficiency. However, when the system detects wheel slippage or changing road conditions, it automatically redirects torque to the rear axle, distributing power to the wheels with the most grip.
