Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system is an advanced drivetrain technology designed to enhance traction, control, and overall driving confidence. Available across a wide range of Volkswagen models, from the Taos to the Atlas and even electric vehicles with dual-motor setups, 4MOTION adapts to road and weather conditions in real time to optimize vehicle dynamics.
At its core, 4MOTION is Volkswagen’s name for its all-wheel drive system. In gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles, it typically uses an electro-hydraulic centre differential known as a Haldex coupling. Under normal driving conditions, most of the power is sent to the front wheels for efficiency. However, when the system detects wheel slippage or changing road conditions, it automatically redirects torque to the rear axle, distributing power to the wheels with the most grip. This transition happens in milliseconds, providing seamless traction and preventing wheelspin before the driver even notices.
In Volkswagen’s ID electric vehicles, such as the ID.4 and ID. Buzz, the principle of 4MOTION is preserved, but the implementation is different. Instead of a central mechanical differential, AWD models use dual motors—one on each axle—to control power independently. This setup allows for even faster torque distribution and precise control, which is especially useful in challenging road or weather conditions. The electric 4MOTION system also enhances cornering performance and stability by fine-tuning the torque split between the front and rear wheels.
4MOTION adds more than just winter-weather confidence. It improves dry road cornering by distributing torque for balanced handling, enhances towing stability by improving grip under load, and offers a safety net in emergency manoeuvres. The system works in conjunction with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and other onboard systems to provide a seamless, confidence-inspiring drive in any condition.
